Olive Oil for Bone Health

by on October 9, 2012

Mediterranean diet (close up)The Mediterranean diet is widely known to be among the healthiest in the world. Now new research is showing that in particular, the high intake of olive oil in this diet is associated with increased levels of the markers which are necessary for healthy bone formation, called osteocalcin.

Olive oil from Imperia in Liguria, Italy.Men between the ages of 55 and 80 were asked to choose between 3 diets to consume; a low fat diet, a Mediterranean diet enriched with nuts, or a Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil.

After the 2 year study, the research showed that the men who had eaten a diet rich in olive oil had significantly improved bone health, where the other 2 diets showed no improvement.

There is also evidence to show that osteocalcin can benefit insulin secretion which could help guard against diabetes.

More research is needed, but these results are encouraging and there is very good reason to include olive oil in everyone’s diet regardless.
