Chocolate Medicine More Easily Absorbed

A chocolate bar and melted chocolate. Chocolat...

A Cambridge based biotechnology company, Lycotec, has developed a process which makes drugs more easily delivered into the body and absorbed into the liver.

The process? Mix it with chocolate!

Lycotec identified that patients fail to regularly take their medication over long periods of time and saw the potential to mix them with chocolate to make them more appealing, as with children’s sweet flavoured cough medicines.

The founder of Lycotec, Ivan Petyaev, first used this method when trying to persuade soldiers to keep taking their medication after suffering strokes and brain injuries.

The company has conducted preliminary tests with potential chocolate formulations for statin drugs to lower cholesterol, metabolic syndrome and inflammation.
